My Heritage, My Mother

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve sort of been on temporary hiatus from music and photography due to technical reasons, but will have some possibly exciting news coming shortly regarding a new project.

In the mean time, feeling nostalgic once again, I started to delve deeper into my Mother’s history since it is such a unique and interesting one. She was born and raised in a country known as Eritrea. Most Americans for some reason have never heard of this place so in the past I have always just said “It’s Ethiopia.” And for awhile there, it was technically a federation of Ethiopia against the will of the Eritrean people, but that’s a whole other story.

Eritrea is a country in the horn of Africa that at one time was an Italian colony and from 1936 to 1941 when Mussolini was in power, was known as Italian East Africa along with Ethiopia and Somalia.

It was then, in 1937, that my mother was born. She used to tell me stories of how Hyenas would rummage through her family’s backyard at night, and about the time when she was a young girl, she went to the only movie theater near her in Asmara, the Cinema Impero, and the Shiftas (Ethiopian Bandits or Rebels) would ride through on horseback shooting up the town and movie theater. She said that day was the most terrifying of her life as she came very close to being kidnapped and/or shot!

Sorting through old pictures I found of my mom brought back these stories and got me scouring the web for any information on Italian Eritreans.

I even managed to actually find a photo of the movie theater my mom used to go to (and was almost killed in) which still stands to this day!
