National Photographers’ Rights Day

Yesterday was the first-ever Photographers’ Rights Rally in Los Angeles, Ca. The event, known as National Photographers’ Rights Day, or NPRD, was organized by “Discarted” and a flickr group was created to explain the motivation behind the rally and to share information and photos from the event.

We met at the Hollywood and Highland Metro Station and after a couple of hours getting to know each other, camera gear discussions and taking photos, we took the Redline down to Union Station.

I met some great people, took a few cool pictures and wished that this was a monthly event (at least) as it was just too important to be a once a year thing and it was a great experience as well; to get out on the streets and capture the many characters of Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles.

This particular photo was taken at Union Station of video-blogger Naomi Mercer interviewing Discarted about the Photographers’ Rights Rally. To see more photos from my perspective, you can view my flickr set created for the event.

The warehouse and the workers who pack and ship tens of thousands of products each day are the subject as I continue on with this photo essay.

The warehouse itself was overwhelming, but the workers were happy, hard working and personable as they worked their sections.

Continuing the series on the Fashion Design and Manufacturing house near the City of Commerce are the collection of photos I call “The Factory.”

These are of the factory workers who make the prototype products for the designers. Though I was originally commissioned to photograph this company for their catalogue, this has also become my own personal photo essay on the process of design and manufacturing.

I recently finished a series of photo sessions for a Fashion Design and Manufacturing house near the City of Commerce. This was my first official paying photography gig and the good news was… it wasn’t wedding photography! (something I’ve avoided with a passion, not that there’s anything wrong with it.)

The shoot was quite fun and more importantly, gave me much needed experience in Reportage style photography as I tried to capture the “moments” of the designers and factory personnel in their day to day work.

I love this story-telling style of photography and I look forward to doing much more of it. Now if only someone would send me overseas to cover a few stories in Europe, or Asia, or the Middle East, or…
